sinks in water, and is moderately durable. It has been used to

Nutrition and Medicine.
The mangosteen has been used for nutritional and medicinal purposes
for many centuries by Filipinos, Thai, Indian, Indonesian, and
other people in Asia to alleviate fever, diarrhea, headaches,
and heal wounds. This fruit is now widely accepted as a
natural remedy for a surprising number of other ailments which
include arthritis and fibromyalgia; it may also moderate asthma and eczema.
The dried rind is powdered and administered to
overcome dysentery. As an ointment, it is applied on eczema and
other skin disorders. The rind decoction is used to relieve
cystitis, gonorrhea and gleets and is applied externally as an
astringent lotion. When the rind is steeped in water
overnight, the infusion is given as a remedy for chronic
diarrhea in adults and children. Filipinos employ a decoction of
the leaves and bark to treat thrush, diarrhea, dysentery and
urinary disorders. In Malaya, an infusion of the leaves,
combined with unripe banana and benzoin is applied to the wound
of circumcision. A root decoction is taken to regulate
menstruation. A bark extract called "amibiasine", is used for
treatment of amoebic dysentery.
